Planning for Instruction

inTASC Standard 7: The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross- disciplinary skills, and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context.

Detailed instructional plans are necessary for teachers to engage students in rigorous, standards-based learning. When planning for instruction, teachers must consider their curriculum as well as students' contexts and prior experiences. Considering all of this, teachers then use multiple resources to plan engaging and rigorous lessons.

As a second grade teacher, I plan for instruction in a variety of ways. I create long term and unit plans to map out long term goals for my students. I also plan daily full group lessons to teach and reinforce new ELA, math, science, and social studies skills. I create differentiated small group math and reading lessons based on data from formative and summative assessments. Finally, I also plan culture building activities, such as daily morning meetings.

Conclusion

This section of my portfolio shows evidence that I effectively plan for my students' success by creating long term, unit, and daily lesson plans. I use knowledge about my content area, my curriculum, and a variety of other resources to plan rigorous instruction. I plan collaboratively with others to ensure that I am always backwards planning. First, my team comes up with end goals and objectives. Then, we backwards plan to figure out what needs to be accomplished for students to meet these objectives. I also use what I know about my students and their community context to drive my planning process. Plans that include a variety of resources and intentionally consider what will engage and motivate second grade students at my school allow students to achieve rigorous academic goals.
