Long Term Planning

Math Long Term Plan

Below is a second grade math long term plan. The long term plan describes the big goals for the whole year and maps out the units that will allow my students to get there. This plan ensures that I am planning for my students to meet rigorous academic goals. The unit plan maps out standards and objectives for each unit as well as time estimates, which are often adjusted to meet student needs. The unit plan also lays out enrichment and remediation goals for each unit. I often use these when planning small group math lessons to better differentiate and meet students exactly where they are.

Project Based Learning Long Term Plan

I also create semester-long project based learning plans. My school has two celebrations of project based learning, one at the end of each semester. These celebrations are called Wingspan, and they are an opportunity for every student to share cross-disciplinary projects with their families and community members. Last year, our spring semester project was around how community helpers influence our community. Students went on field trips, did research, and listening to guest speakers. They completed writing projects around different community helpers and thought about what kind of community helper they would want to be. Though project-based learning can be flexible and respond to student interests, creating this long term plan with my team allowed me to map out general questions, standards, and objectives. This allowed students to participate in an a cross-disciplinary project that was relevant to their community while engaging with rigorous academic content.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I long term plan for my students' academic success. In collaboration with my team and instructional coaches, I create several types of long term plans. Long term plans for math and reading follow my school's curriculum and lay out daily objectives and assessments. My long term plan for project based learning is less detailed and allows for more student-driven flexibility. Both types of long term plans set students up for success by combining the curriculum, cross disciplinary skills, with knowledge of my students and community to support each student in achieving rigorous academic growth.
